What is a 3D/4D ultrasound?

The D is short for dimensional. The 3D/4D ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to produce images on a monitor. 3D images look more full and life-like compared to the old flat 2D images. 4D images add the element of real time. With 4D you might see your baby yawn, stretch, or suck their thumb.

Who will perform my ultrasound?

Only specifically trained and experienced 3D ultrasound technicians provide imaging services. All technicians do their best to provide a mother-centered environment that focuses exclusively on the needs of the family

Does this replace a medical or diagnostic ultrasound?

No! This does not replace your medical ultrasound or any prenatal care. This is an optional non-diagnostic service and you must be under the care of a Midwife or Doctor in order to use our services. The technicians will not discuss any medical information, please ask your caregiver if you have any concerns with your pregnancy.

When in my pregnancy is the best time to have my ultrasound performed?

People come at different times for different reasons. For an early look you would come between 8 and 15 weeks gestation. Gender determination is more accurate after 16 weeks.

For 3 and 4D images it depends on the look you want to capture. Early weeks can be really cute! For images where the baby has chubby cheeks the best time to come is between 30-34 weeks. This is when the baby is developing fat layers and these help to obtain better pictures. Twin pregnancies should come before 28 weeks to get the best view of your babies. Most women come in for gender determination early and then come again later for 3D when their baby has more fat. Image quality depends on the baby’s size, position, movement, placenta position, amount of amniotic fluid and maternal tissue. Due to these factors we cannot guarantee image quality, however we may arrange another visit for free.

Who can I bring to my ultrasound?

You can bring family members and/or friends, plus children are welcome. Since this is a special bonding experience, your family/friends can be with you throughout the entire session. We have a large TV so that all the guests can look at the baby.

How do I prepare for my ultrasound?

Dress comfortably, preferably in a two-piece outfit. You do not need a full bladder, however it is important to be well hydrated, even days before your ultrasound in order to try and obtain quality pictures. If your diet allows it may be helpful to bring a snack and drink with you to your session.

Do I need to book it in advance?

You should try to book ahead for an appointment since they fill fast, especially the evening and Saturday spots.

What kinds of payment are acceptable?

We accept cash, Debit, Visa and MasterCard. Sorry, we do not accept cheques or amex.

Can you tell the sex of the baby?

Yes! After 16 weeks we can determine the baby’s sex. If you want to keep it a surprise just let the technician know and they will avoid taking images of that area.

Is Ultrasound Safe?

Yes. Ultrasound has been used in obstetrics for over 40 years. There is no scientific evidence that ultrasound causes any adverse side effects to the unborn baby. If you have any healthcare concerns please contact your Midwife or Doctor.
